How Does a Wholesale business work?

i am planning on startin my own online business, and i am looking for a good wholesale company to sell me the product. What im not too sure of is that do i help the wholesale company sell the product or do i buy from them, and keep the products in my garage and then re-sell the items back out with my own prices?
